01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Kalamazoo at 5051 W Main St, Niskers Grill & Slap Shot Hockey Bar serves up a compelling fusion of American comfort food and vibrant sports bar energy. This local gem expertly blends the hearty flavors of classic grill fare with the welcoming buzz of a hockey-centric hangout, making it a go-to destination for both food lovers and game watchers alike.

The menu is a celebration of bold, satisfying dishes crafted with fresh, quality ingredients. On Thursdays, the spotlight is on the Black Bean Burger – a juicy, flavorful vegetarian option priced at $7.99 – alongside the iconic Beefalo Burger for $8.49, combining rich, house-mixed meat blends that showcase Niskers’ commitment to freshness and taste. Come Friday, dive into the Monster Brat with Kraut, Curly Fries, and Beer, a perfectly paired combination at $10.99 that delivers a hearty, indulgent experience embodying the spirit of American bar food.

Beyond the savory bites, Niskers offers an enticing lineup of beverages and sweet treats to round out your visit. From crisp bottled water to delectably creamy hand-dipped shakes or malts, and classic desserts like vanilla ice cream cups, fudgy brownies, brownie sundaes, and chocolate chip cookies, every craving is thoughtfully catered to. Whether you’re winding down after a game or seeking a casual meal, these indulgences provide a sweet finish that resonates long after the last bite.

The atmosphere here is alive with a laid-back, community-centered vibe, enriched by the friendly, attentive staff and passionate owner who clearly take pride in the guest experience. Customers like Colin DeAgazio highlight the enjoyable energy during game days, while Cheryl Lynn's two-decade loyalty speaks volumes about the consistency and care ingrained in every burger and sandwich served. The fresh-made buns and never-frozen meat blend elevate the flavors, elevating what could be simple bar food into something truly memorable.

For those with dietary needs, Niskers doesn’t disappoint either. Gluten-free guests can revel in soft, well-structured buns that defy expectations, thanks to thoughtful preparation and mindful sourcing. As Isabella Perez (Bella) notes, the wings maintain a crispy, light saucing that strikes the perfect balance—comforting without the grease, ideal for sharing while cheering on your favorite team.

The food isn’t just good—it’s crafted with heart. Take the "Beefalo Burger done up with cheesehead toppings, double burger with gravy, bacon, and cheese curds" paired with a surprisingly potent whipped cream white Russian, as shared by Big Nope. This combination captures Niskers’ inventive spirit and ability to surprise and delight, ensuring every visit has moments worth savoring.

Whether you’re a Kalamazoo local, a sports enthusiast, or a traveler passing through, Niskers Grill & Slap Shot Hockey Bar delivers more than just a meal. It’s a warm, vibrant community hub where quality food and genuine hospitality meet. Expect attentive service—echoed by CVR’s story of exceptional staff juggling multiple tables with grace—and an inviting environment where good times and great flavors are always on the menu.

In sum, Niskers offers a rich tapestry of tastes and experiences that linger beyond the last fry or sip of your malt. From the kitchen’s dedication to fresh, homemade elements to the lively bar atmosphere buzzing with local spirit, this spot stands out as a cherished Kalamazoo tradition well worth discovering – or revisiting time and again.

Niskers has been serving up my favorite burgers, sandwiches, and fries for over TWENTY years! From their original location in Portage to their new updated location with a bar in Kalamazoo, their quality has stayed true and consistent. You can't go wrong with their burgers - the meat blend is mixed fresh in house, never frozen, with fresh baked buns and your choice of toppings. My go to however is their grilled chicken sandwiches. You can add various flavors like Teriyaki, Thai, Jerk, and Buffalo, served up on the same fresh baked buns and variety of unique toppings. Thai grilled chicken with cheddar, lettuce, pico de gallo and mayo - the BEST. Don't sleep on their curly fries. Fresh cut and made to order, they taste like REAL potatoes and have all the crispy edges (ordered them well done with a side of cheese sauce!) The newer Kalamazoo location also has a full bar and runs a variety of drink specials. Their Bloody Mary's hit just the right spot for an early Saturday or Sunday lunch (or brunch??)

The food was delicious, ended up getting the beefalo burger done up with cheese head toppings, double burger with gravy, bacon, and cheese curds, and the sunny poutine. With the whipped cream white Russian that was stronger than expected, we loved it. Will happily come back. Chill atmosphere, lots of regulars.

We were two hours from home. We saw this place on facebook and thought we would give it a try. They only had one waitress. Didn't get her name but she was a young blond. She was FANTASTIC. She had 3 large parties plus several 2 and 4 toppers. She was amazing, organized, and very attentive to all her tables. Food was served hot. The burger was fantastic. We will definately be back when passing through Kalamazoo.

The gluten free bun here is amazing! It holds its shape and is really soft. I honestly wouldn’t have known it was gluten free. The burgers and wings are delicious! The wings are crispy and perfectly lightly sauced. It’s bar food, but it was all fresh and not greasy. Our server wasn’t knowledgeable on gluten containing products on the menu and had to ask the back multiple things, so if you’re sensitive to gluten and wondering- the curly fries and wings are not coated in flour, and the cheese sauce also doesn’t contain gluten.

First visit to Niskers, and I can guarantee that I will return. I enjoyed one of the best burgers I've ever had, and my dining companions felt the same. The quality of the food here is incredible and priced at a point that a normal person can afford. Service was outstanding and attentive without being intrusive. The entire place is spotless, and there's plenty of screens to satisfy and sports fan. Noise level was amazingly good. We were able to hold normal conversations during our meal. There is an incredible selection of options available for burger preparation. No matter what you like, you're probably going to find it here. Come as you are, settle into a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, and enjoy one of the best meals you've had in a while! EDIT: I've returned several times since my original review. Why? Because it really is that good!

Visiting colleges in the area. Wanted to try something different. Read the reviews and decided to check it out. The food was great and the vibes were cool. The alcoholic beverage was weak and didn't taste good. They don't stay open late. We arrived at 9:30pm ordered our appetizer. Then our waitress came to the table to inform us the kitchen closes in 30 minutes. Wow..okay how about letting us know that when we arrived, because now we felt rushed to pick something off the menu. We received our food in a timely manner and was out the door by 10:15pm.
